New limits on file-swapping at universities
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

Undated-AP -- Students arriving at college for the fall semester are finding things have changed. The campus Internet connection is no longer a free pipeline to as much music and movies as their computers can hold.

There are new restrictions on downloading entertainment. And school officials are issuing stern warnings against it.

At some schools, they're even using software to limit the amount of data that can flow in or out of a computer when students use file-sharing programs.

But they're also coming up with some options. At least a dozen universities are looking at ways of offering students a music service that would be paid for along with room and board costs.

An official at U-C-L-A says the entertainment industry is putting a lot of pressure on the schools to crack down. The school received dozens of notices every month last year from record companies and movie studios, complaining about copyright violations.
