Simon to tell her secret; winning bidder revealed
Edgartown, Massachusetts-AP -- An N-B-C television executive has put up 50-thousand dollars at a charity auction to share a pop music secret with singer Carly Simon. It's been a musical mystery for more than 30 years -- who exactly was Simon singing about in her 1972 hit "You're So Vain?"
Dick Ebersol, the president of N-B-C Sports, was the bidder who won lunch at Simon's Massachusetts home, where she'll perform the song and then reveal its subject. In return, he must swear to tell no one else.
The winning bidder was revealed on N-B-C's "Today" show.
Over the years, speculation has centered on Warren Beatty, who Simon once dated; Mick Jagger, who sang back-up on the song; and James Taylor, Simon's ex-husband.
The lunch was offered at an auction to raise money for various charities on Martha's Vineyard.
