New York-AP -- Stocks staged a comeback toward the end of the trading day but closed mixed.

The Dow industrials were down more than 100 points during the session, but ended the day with a gain of 32 points at 91-hundred-86.

Declining issues led advancers by almost two-to-one. Volume on the New York Exchange was light at one-point-two (b) billion shares.

The S-and-P 500 was also higher, gaining two points. But the Nasdaq Composite Index lost one and-a-half points.

It was a quiet session despite a positive report from the government which contained good news for the manufacturing sector. It showed factory orders climbing one-point-seven percent in june. That was better than analysts were expecting and was the third straight increase.
