'American Wedding' takes cake at box office; 'Gigli' bites the dust
Los Angeles-AP -- "American Wedding" has taken the cake at the weekend box office. The tale of oddball sweethearts has collected an estimated 34-point-three (m) million dollars.
It's the third film in the raunchy "American Pie" sex comedies, but earned about eleven (m) million less than 2001's "American Pie Two."
Still, one industry expert says that's a good performance in a summer of lackluster sequels.
The Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez flick "Gigli" debuted dismally following two weeks of toxic buzz generated by harsh reviews. It earned three-point-eight (m) million dollars.
A "Gigli" producer says constant gossip and coverage of Affleck and Lopez's real-life romance may have created a backlash against the movie.
"Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over" came in second at the weekend box office, followed by "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Cure of the Black Pearl," "Seabiscuit" and "Bad Boys Two."
