State commission studying base realignment
(Providence-AP) -- Lawmakers and professionals say the defense industry is essential to retaining jobs in the state of Rhode Island and New England. The state's Base Realignment and Closure Commission met at the
Statehouse today to discuss ways to protect defense companies and military bases in the area.
Governor Carcieri formed the commission to respond to the federal government's plans to close numerous bases around the country in 2005. He also says Rhode Island holds substantial military assets, including Naval Station Newport on Aquidneck Island and national guard facilities on Quonset Point, which are state-run, but federally funded.
If the state can't explain why they are important, Carcieri says, the sites could close.
