Brown Student Arraigned on Drug Charges
(Providence-AP) -- A Brown University summer student was ordered held without bail in Providence District Court Tuesday for possession of chocolate-covered hallucinogenic mushrooms.
Nineteen-year-old Ryan Stitham was charged with felony possession with intent to deliver narcotics after his arrest two weeks ago.
Police say the student was carrying a bag filled with nearly 50 pounds of the packaged mushrooms and nearly 13-thousand dollars in cash. The Providence Journal reports that the illegal drugs were valued by police at about 37-thousand dollars.
Brown University spokesman Mark Nickel says Stitham is no longer enrolled in his two summer courses.
Stitham is from Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, where his father, Kevin Stitham, is a District Court judge in Piscataquis County.
A bail hearing is scheduled for August Sixth.
