Annan may recommend a new war crimes prosecutor for Rwanda

United Nations-AP -- United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan (KOH'-fee AN'-nan) may recommend that a new war crimes prosecutor take charge of cases from the 1994 Rwanda (ruh-WAHN'-dah) genocide.

Those cases are now being handled by prosecutor Carla Del Ponte (PAHN'-teh), who is also trying those responsible for major crimes during the Balkan wars in the 1990's.

Annan says there have been discussions among Security Council members on whether the Yugoslav and Rwanda tribunals would not be more effective if each had a separate prosecutor.

Leaders of the genocide in Rwanda are blamed for killing more than 500-thousand Tutsis (TOOT'-sees) and Hutu (HOO'-too) political moderates.
