(Washington-AP) -- Rhode Island Hospital is receiving close to 500-thousand dollars from the federal government for construction of a new emergency department.

According to Senator Lincoln Chafee, the hospital plans to double the size of its emergency treatment areas.

Chafee says the construction plan includes creating a separate entrance for urgent care and increasing the size of the trauma area.

The U-S Department of Health is releasing the funds as part of the 2003 Appropriations bill.
