Congressman calls for Federal Investigation into the Smoke Shop Confrontation
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

(Providence-AP) -- The chairman of the U-S House committee in charge of Indian affairs has called for a federal investigation of the smoke shop incident.
California Congressman Richard Pombo wrote a letter to Attorney General John Ashcroft, saying the confrontation with state police and Narragansett tribe members have outraged tribe leaders
nationwide.
Pombo says the tribal leaders are concerned that the Narragansetts' civil rights were violated.
Pombo says a federal investigation will provide objectivity in the matter.
Representatives of the state and tribe are scheduled to meet with a federal court judge on Monday afternoon.
