House aligns itself behind Bush policy on snowmobiles, forests
Capitol Hill-AP -- President Bush won a string of victories in the House that should please business interests and is sure to anger environmentalists. In a close vote, the House rejected a ban on snowmobiles in Yellowstone and the nearby Grand Teton National Park. Critics argue the vehicles spew too much pollution and threaten wildlife.
The House is also upholding administration plans to allow development on some of the (m) millions of acres of federal forests where road-building is banned.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi says the Republican-led House is aligning itself with special interests rather than public interests. But Republicans accuse their opponents of misunderstanding and exaggerating the environmental problems being debated.
