Romney: No money to build transit line from Boston to Fall River and New Bedford
(Boston-AP) -- Governor Romney says the state cannot afford to go ahead with any expansion of rail service in Massachusetts.
Among the projects affected are the 470 (m) million dollar Greenbush commuter line to the South Shore, and the 700 (m) dollar New Bedford-Fall River commuter line.
Romney said it could be several years before the state again has enough money for such discretionary projects.
In recent months, the Romney administration has been engaged in a comprehensive review of all pending transportation projects.
Romney said yesterday that he knows his remarks will not be popular. However he said that in the past, politicians have made promises to bring back train service that they could not keep.
