Smoke Shop Confrontation
Indian's leader: Carcieri should apologize to the tribe
(Providence-AP) -- Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas says he thinks Governor Carcieri should apologize to his tribe.
Tuesday, Carcieri publicly apologized to Rhode Islanders for any injuries suffered in Monday's raid of the Narragansetts' smoke shop.
Thomas says today that he appreciates the apology to those who were hurt, but that Carcieri should apologize to the tribe -- especially since the governor says state police didn't follow
instructions to withdraw if they met resistance.
Thomas also says the review board investigating the incident should be independent, rather than state appointed, and a member of the tribe should be on the board.
Thomas made the comments this morning in front of U-S District Court. His tribe is seeking a restraining order to keep the state from interfering with the smoke shop.
The state is seeking a restraint order of its own in state court.
