Smoke Shop Confrontation
Federal Court will decide both the Narragansett's suit and the state's request for a restraining order
(Providence-AP) -- It appears, for now, the federal court will decide whether any restraining orders will be issued in the aftermath of Monday's smoke shop raid.
Officials for the Narragansett Indian Tribe appeared in the chambers of a federal judge today. They are seeking a restraining order to keep the state police from interfering with their smoke
shop.
Deputy Attorney General Gerald Coyne says the judge will hold another conference on Monday.
Meanwhile, attorneys for the state also were in Washington County Superior Court today. They are seeking a restraining order to keep the tribe from reopening their smoke shop.
But a Superior Court judge says the Narragansetts filed papers asking that the case be moved to federal court. The Narragansetts did not have any representation in the state court this morning.
