Smoke Shop Raid
Carcieri says he's launching a full investigation into the Smoke Shop raid
(Providence-AP) -- Governor Carcieri says he is launching a full independent investigation into Monday's raid at the Narragansett Smoke Shop.
Carcieri says that the investigation will look into the conduct of the state police.
The governor defends the officers actions but says it's unfortunate the raid turned hostile.
State Police entered the tax-free shop yesterday afternoon in an effort to shut it down. The scene was captured by T-V news cameras.
The video footage shows police and members of the tribe wrestled with each other while police attempted to confiscate the tobacco products and close the shop.
The governor accused the tribe of staging the riot for the cameras.
Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas says the police came in like storm troopers and the tribal members were just protecting their land.
