Controversial Smoke Shop Opens
The Narragansett Indians have announced the opening of a tax-free smoke shop on tribal land in Charlestown today. The move comes after an effort by the state to help the tribe become economically self-sufficient. The tribe announced in May that it wouldn't open a smoke shop as a way to generate income. The tribe has also lobbied lawmakers to let it build a casino in the state. Governor Carcieri has opposed the smoke shop, in part because he says it would cut into tax collections.
