Fall River Property Taxes Rising?
A new city budget in Fall River could have Property owners paying a lot more in taxes. Its under a 183 million dollar budget expected to be unveiled today by Mayor Edward Lambert.
Newspaper reports indicated that residential property taxes would climb as much as 26 percent. Which is an average of 335 dollars per homeowner. That figure could be reduced, however, if the
Legislature approves a bill allowing cities and towns to shift a greater portion of the tax burden on to commercial property.
The spending plan for the fiscal year beginning in July also calls for major spending cuts to make up for a sharp drop in state aid. Lambert says the refusal of Governor Romney and the Legislature to consider new taxes or short-term borrowing has left communities like Fall River with no choice but to raise local taxes.
