Former East Providence Police Chief Sworn In As Executive High Sheriff
(Providence-AP) -- East Providence Police Chief Gary Dias has been sworn in as the state's new executive high sheriff.
Dias is a 30-year veteran of the East Providence police department and has been chief since 1996.
Dias was appointed earlier this month to replace James DeCastro, who was fired for alleged mismanagement.
Last fall, State Police Lieutenant Stephen Lynch was appointed to run the sheriffs department's day-to-day operations.
His intervention followed complaints from judges about courthouse security and a spate of embarrassing incidents involving sheriffs.
