Club Fire Tragedy
Attorney's For Nightclub Owners File Responses In Workers Comp Case

(Providence-AP) -- Lawyers for owners of The Station nightclub say the fine assessed to their clients is unconstitutional.
The state Department of Labor and Training fined Michael and Jeffrey Derderian more than a (m) million dollars for failing to carry the insurance for the club's workers.
But the Derderians' lawyers say the fine is excessive.
In papers filed today in workers' compensation court, the lawyers argue the fine should be thrown out. They say the fine is out of line with the penalties imposed in other cases.
Attorneys for the state are expected to file papers today defending the fine. Each side now has two weeks to reply to the filings.
The February 20th fire at the nightclub killed 100 people including several club employees.
