Waterfire Reducing Number Of Events

(Providence-AP) -- A drop in corporate donations has reduced the staging of the popular Waterfire event in Providence.
Organizers say they have enough money to put on nine of the riverfront displays this summer, down from 14 last year.
The reduction will affect the midsummer months most -- there are just two Waterfires scheduled between the end of June and late September.
Organizers are considering scaled-back events and soliciting money from visitors.
Waterfire involves the lighting of wood in baskets in rivers in downtown Providence, accompanied by music. At typical event costs up to 60-thousand dollars.
The first Waterfire this season is this Sunday.
