It's quick and simple. That's why they call it fast food, but we all know going for convenience may mean going for more fat and more calories.
"I have three kids and we go to these fast food places more than I'd like to."
"We realize people are busy and have busy schedules and may end up going to a fast food restaurant for their meal and that's fine," says "Rhode To Health" member Louise Paiva, "At least if you're aware of what choices are better, you'll make a better choice."
That's why the "Rhode to Health" coalition has developed a handy reference guide. It gives you a breakdown of the higher and lower-calorie menu items you see at drive thru's from Wendy's to Dunkin' Donuts. Just one way the coalition is working to help improve the health of Rhode Islanders.
"It's a handy guide that can be put in the glove compartment or in the visor of the car. So, if you're waiting in line at a fast food restaurant, you can take ten seconds and get an idea of what's a healthier choice", says Paiva.
People were surprised to see how many calories they had consumed on their regular fast food trips. Evidence that, when it comes to calories, what you don't know can hurt you.
"I don't think i'll ever super size anything again!"
These cards are available in English and Spanish and you can get them for free at any hospital in Rhode Island or through the Rhode Island Department Of Health web site.
