First Date Conversation Starters
First dates can be scary when you feel you just don't know what to say. The most important thing to remember is that we are all made of the same thread so the person sitting across from you is in the same boat, sharing your fears. Review the list below before you go to make sure you have something handy for any uncomfortable silences and then just be yourself!
- Compliment the outfit that your date is wearing. This will make him or her feel good about themselves right off the bat. Ask them where they bought it and you'll learn something right away about his or her style preferences.
- Ask your date how his or her day was. This topic will bleed into a converstation about what her or she does for a living, or on a day to day basis.
- Ask your date how he or she got to this postion - what types of things s/he did before.
- Ask your date if s/he likes what s/he is doing now and if s/he could have any job in the world, what it would be.
- Ask you date where s/he lives and has lived. You might end up in the name-game and find out you have friends or aquantances in common. This is a great bonding element.
- Ask your date where he or she would ideally like to live.
- Ask you date about his or her family.
- Bring up a current events topic. ("Did you see the X on the news today?")
- Ask your date what he or she likes to do on the weekends or in his or her spare time.
Let the responses take you from there.
*Remember, the most important thing is to listen and not dominate the conversation. An even flow of conversation will ensure that both parties have a good time on the date and leave feeling you both know something new about each other.
